A tattoo artist, her biggest fan and the most beautiful canal in Copenhagen. This is the story of how Lex and Anthony got engaged far from home.
Lex is a tattoo artist. She works with her hands, she sees beauty in permanence, and she has spent years turning other people's most meaningful stories into something they will carry on their skin forever. It is a rare kind of gift. And it is one of the very first things Anthony fell in love with about her. He knew early on that he wanted to be around that energy for the rest of his life. So he started making plans.
How did they find me?
Lex had been following Bigwig Photography on Instagram for a long time. Anthony went through her followers, found me there, and reached out to plan the whole thing. She led him straight to me without even knowing it. Best recommendation I have ever had. 😊
A long way from home
Lex and Anthony flew over from the US, two people who already had the kind of relationship that makes long flights feel short. Europe was always going to call them at some point. They are travellers at heart, the sort of couple who adds cities to their list the way other people add to a grocery run. Copenhagen felt right. Old and beautiful and full of stories. Exactly their kind of place.
Anthony had done his research. He found a spot just off the canal where a grand old brick archway frames the coloured houses of Nyhavn like a painting. He waited for the right moment.
He had been carrying the ring all the way from home. He was ready.
The moment
One moment, they were walking the cobblestones together, the colorful Nyhavn buildings glowing in blues and yellows behind them, and the next, Anthony was on one knee, looking up at her with everything he had ever wanted to say written plainly across his face.
Proposals during a session are always so special to photograph. As a photographer, I personally love this kind of proposal because it gives couples space to slow down, be fully present with each other, and truly enjoy the moment together while everything is beautifully documented. Surprise proposals are incredibly sweet too, but there is something so emotional and intimate about sharing the experience as part of the session itself.
She laughed. She held his hands. She said yes. And the whole canal felt a little warmer for it.
Look at the photograph, and you see all of it. Her long hair catching the breeze. The tattoos she has collected over the years running up her legs, every one a chapter of the life that brought her here. His red beard and the expression of a man who could not quite believe how lucky he was. The arch above them like a frame someone put there on purpose.
What comes next
This was not the end of the trip. It was not the end of anything, really. Lex and Anthony are the kind of people who have a long list of places still to go. They came from the US for this moment, and they will be back on a plane soon enough, heading somewhere else, adding to the story. Only now they will do all of it as an engaged couple.
Copenhagen became the place where it started. That is not a bad thing to be.
Testimonial from the client: "We had the best experience during our photoshoot! Nertilas portfolio is absolutely stunning so we trusted her with any and all recommendations on locations/ poses. And the results were fantastic. From the beginning of the session, she was super friendly and created a soft/ playful/ relaxed vibe and as the session went on, and we got to chatting it make the whole experience super friendly and that level of comfort shows in the photos! For any special occasion or to document a trip to Copenhagen, I highly recommend Nertila!"
